Dungeness River Walks

The Dungeness River is basically in our backyard – we can walk there from our home and go there often. We are fortunate to be able to take a little-used trail that leads to areas seldom visited by humans – and from there it is easy to slow down and just be. I will add photos to this page as time allows. (Click to enlarge the photos).

Enjoy!

Autumn 2025

In early fall, we go down to the river to see the salmon run. It is an odd-numbered year, which means it is a year for the pinks. Once again, they are here in great numbers. It is a thrilling sight to watch them work their way upstream to complete their life cycle. By October, they are gone – but the fall colors, contrasting boldly against the deep evergreens, are simply spectacular. Down by the hatchery, we scare up a large heron who, annoyed with our presence, squawks loudly. It’s amazing how such a large, gangly pterodactyl-like bird can camouflage so easily among the trees (sorry, no photo – that one got away). Most of the blackberries are gone at this point, but there are still a few late bloomers and an occasional tart treat. There are also a surprising number of other flowers – the comfrey is having a second bloom of hanging purple flowers that are very attractive to pollinators right now. I tried to capture the fairy lights on the water, but of course, it is impossible. Fairies are like that.

Fall is beautiful, magical, and one of my favorite seasons.
